How to speak a language confidently?
“I wasn't the prettiest girl in the room, but I learned to carry myself with confidence- that’s how you make the best impression on people”
Indeed, Priyanka Chopra Jonas seems to have a strong say on her relationship with confidence.
Confidence plays a pivotal role in drawing your image in people’s mind, more so in your mind too. Well, I’ve begun to learn the French language because I’d always adored how romantic a language could be. French feels like the Urdu of France, the smoothest language, yet the toughest.
No matter what the language you want to talk in, English, Hindi, French, or German; one needs to have a hold which helps effectively communicate the message.
Remember your motive is to communicate the message crystal clear. For that to happen you need to be sure of what you want to say.
Let’s take an example of the English language, the second most widely spoken language in India. Many a times, we notice whilst speaking we can’t figure out an apt word, can’t articulate well or can’t pronounce a simple word. Which may not be appreciated well enough, and makes a bad impression too.
So, let’s set some rules that proficient speakers swear by work like magic.
Rule #1: Visualise
Always make sure what is the message to be communicated to the receiver. Frame the sentences in your mind before you bring it to the tongue. It might take time initially, but, once you get the hang of it, with time and practice you’ll find a way to do that effortlessly.
Visualise how you will look and sound. Know what needs to change. Prepare by visualising scenarios and picturing how you will be different.
It, indeed is a powerful saying:
Think twice before you speak once.
Surely, you’ll be registering words and phrases in your mind, and within no time will you be speaking without wasting time and faffing.
Rule #2: Never use Umm or Err as filler.
Well, don’t we all develop the habit of uttering ‘umm…’ ‘err…’ or ‘aah…’ while thinking to speak before completing your sentences.
When one does that it seems a little off and underconfident, gives a feeling of week intent. Make sure you’re not making noises while thinking, or filling up your sentences with them.
Whenever you feel that you’re about to err, what you can do to avoid it, by making the mouth whilst not speaking actually. Start practicing it now, move your mouth as if you’re saying ‘umm…’ but be careful not to add sound to it. Use this trick while talking and you’re good to do.
Rule #3: Add tones to your speech.
It’s a fact, when we sense a certain tone while hearing somebody speak, we are attracted to them. Also, this person always seems high on energy and confidence. Like, a native speaker.
Practice voice modulations. Try to raise your pitch a little, while you fasten the speech when clearing a query. Do this to come across inquisitive, you’ll seem confident about the question. Don’t intensify this, keep in mind: you don’t to seem rude.
Always be sure of the tone you’re using while speaking.
Remember, an appropriate tone will make a deal and a wrong tone can break a deal.
Keep it sly, but make sure you keep it real. Tones add expression to the speech.
Rule #4: Act the part, but stay true to yourself
Playing the part you need to play to achieve what you want. That’s not selfish. It’s clever. In fact, it’s what truly confident people do. They act. And there’s nothing wrong with that.
Acting doesn’t mean being underhand or false. Nothing changes in terms of your thoughts, your opinions, your beliefs or your values. What does change though is the way you get your point across.
Rule #5: Back Yourself, it’s okay to make fumble a bit, smile.
Back yourself to commit to the change. Make a real conscious effort to change the way you come across. Do this regardless of the challenge you’re facing in a social situation.
Even if you fumble a bit, or make a mistake, make sure to say ‘Oh, sorry’ and smile it away. This makes a fumble look confident.
Don’t forget to really confide in yourself, you’re enough for yourself. While your thoughts and opinions stay the same, what does need to change is the way you actually communicate them. Simply, the way you behave.
Try following these 6 power rules and let the magic unfurl. Act a way, for that practice certain exercises, kickstart your path confidently!
